Filmhack at M&C Saatchi

July 12th, 2012

Following the recent success of the Game5hack initiative, M&C Saatchi has upped the creativity ante yet again with an innovative collaboration with Goldsmiths, University of London, Youtube and Motorola Mobility. FilmHack (#FilmHack) is a 48 hour film challenge which saw 6 teams of creatives, actors, camerapeople and editors write, plan and make a short film over two days.

All films were shot across London in a ‘Dogme style’ using Motorola RAZR™ MAXX handsets and basic sound equipment. The theme for the films was broadly ‘How People Connect’, with each team starting the Hack by picking a genre out of a hat with a prescribed start and end point for their film and. All 6 films linked to provide a continuity thread that will allow them to link together with visual metaphors and can be viewed sequentially to tell a bigger story…think Short Cuts meets Life in a Day in London.

A panel of judges, including M&C Saatchi London ECD Elspeth Lynn, Motorola, Goldsmiths, The BFI, MSN Movies and members of the viral ad network selected an all-round ‘creative’ prize winner, and the films were shown at M&C Saatchi, Golden Square.

However, the challenge doesn’t stop with the completion of the films. A final prize will be awarded to the team that most effectively distributes and promotes their film online, using a combination of free YouTube pre-rolls, social channels and shameless blagging, borrowing and self- promotion to drive views, shares and general internet love and engagement. Both top prizes of £1000 each will be announced together on the 20th July at Google HQ.
